Shadow Drawing

couple months ago during an excursion to Monmartre-the historical artist's district of Paris, my friends and I were all of a sudden surrounded by a group of gypsies with paper and scissors studying our faces and madly cutting away. In a matter of seconds they finished and proudly showed us their masterpieces, (then demanded 10 euros). This reminded me of a shadow drawing that was done of me when I was 6, by my kindergarten teacher. I unearthed upon my next trip to Monterey. Chubby cheeks, and gumball hair ties are what stood out in the black cutout, capturing perfectly the sugar plum dreams of my little girl spirit.

What You'll Need:

  • Smallish Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Eraser
  • 11"x14" white paper
  • 11"x14" black paper
  • Tape
  • A spotlight
  • Chair
  • Glue Stick

Directions:

1. Sit your model down in the chair and aim the spotlight at her face. Tape your white paper on the wall behind her and carefully trace around the shadowed profile of her face with pencil.

2. Un-tape the paper and double it up with a piece of black paper then cut along the traced line. Usually the bottom is a curved line starting lower on the front, then extending higher up the back of the shadow drawing. A collar can be added too, make sure to sketch that out so you know what it is going to look like before you cut away the paper.

3. Glue this to a piece of white paper and voila! The sketch can be reduced on a printer, transferred to a smaller piece of paper, and framed in a small oval frame like in the 18th century if you so desire.
